Renal Diet: Oils, Fats & Spreads

Which oils, fats and spreads can you safely use to cook or flavour your meal while on a renal diet? The table below elucidates on the “kidney-safe” portions of these constituents, so you can still have a flavoursome meal without harming your kidneys.

Recommended Portion: “2 servings” of any one item below per day

Measures: 1 Tablespoon = 15 mL; 1 Teaspoon = 5 mL

    (Avoid Sesame Oil & Sunflower Oil)
    For Cooking: 1-1.5 tablespoons (15-25 mL) for one person per day
    OR
    For flavouring / dressing: 1 teaspoon (5mL)

    Unsalted Butter / Unsalted Margarine
    (Replace with oils or homemade, salt-free spreads if individual is obese
    or on meds to reduce Cholesterol.
    )

    Store-bought Spreads
      Mayonnaise (eggless)
      Soft cheese
      Sour Cream
    Homemade spreads
      Corriander/Cilantro & Mint Chutney
      with lime juice

      Pea Mash spread/dip
    Salad dressings with salt-free flavouring
      Herb vinegar
      Plain yogurt flavoured with
      a pinch of black pepper powder
      & Raw mango powder

      (NOTE:
      Salt-free seasoning includes fresh garlic/
      onion flakes, garlic powder, raw mango
      powder (amchoor), Mrs. Dash salt-free
      seasonings, lime/lemon juice


      Avoid "low-sodium" salt; it is very high in Potassium)
