Protein intake in CKD
Protein is a superstar of sorts in the Nutrient Circles, be it in sickness or in health. But do you completely understand all that you must, when it comes to this “celebrated nutrient” in the context of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?
Having Chronic Kidney Disease implies that our kidneys have not been able to perform their “blood-component balancing functions” as efficiently as it normally should, for at least 3 months at a stretch. As a result, our blood biochemistry goes haywire as the condition progresses. This naturally translates into malfunction of other organs over time. These organs include the Heart, Blood Vessels, Bones, Muscles, Lungs, Nerves, Immune System and the Kidney itself. Such a scenario calls for an immediate, added effort on our part to “assist” our weakening kidneys in restoring the level of blood components to as close to normal as possible. This is where going to a Registered Renal Dietitian and starting a Kidney-friendly Diet plan comes-in.
Among other aspects, a Renal Diet involves lowering your Protein-intake in your daily diet. But for those of us who’ve been there or are current members of the Protein-restriction clan know, how applying the guidelines to your daily life is a whole different challenge!
Keeping all this in mind and from our personal experience with CKD at Team ATK, here’s presenting, your go-to comprehensive guide on Dietary Protein in health & kidney disease.
This guide is curated for you to become “PROTEIN-SMART” while navigating your CKD journey. Go through it and choose for a relatively less challenging patient experience, than otherwise.
